Concrete Block Calculator

Estimate concrete block quantities from net wall area and an editable block-and-mortar module, including a waste allowance.

Project measurements

Measurement system

Quantities use the entered unit face plus mortar joint as the repeating module. This is not structural or code guidance.

Total measured area of doors, windows, and other full openings.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose a measurement system.
  2. Enter wall length and height plus total opening area.
  3. Enter the actual block face dimensions and mortar joint thickness.
  4. Set waste and calculate the whole-block quantity.

How the calculation works

Openings are subtracted from gross wall area. Each block and its mortar joint form a nominal module. Net wall area is divided by module area, waste is applied, and the quantity is rounded up.

Formula

Net wall area = wall area − openings
Module area = (block width + joint) × (block height + joint)
Blocks = net wall area ÷ module area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100), rounded up

Worked example

A 100 ft² wall with a 12 ft² opening leaves 88 ft². A 15.625 in × 7.625 in block with a 0.375 in joint forms a 16 in × 8 in module. The base estimate is 99 blocks; with 5% waste, purchase 104.

Project considerations

  • Measure the exposed block face, not block depth.
  • The editable joint is included in both module dimensions.
  • This tool does not determine wall design, reinforcement, or code requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Why are block and joint dimensions separate?

The block plus mortar joint determines the repeating wall module. Keeping both visible makes the quantity assumption transparent.

How should openings be entered?

Add the measured areas of doors, windows, and other full openings, then enter their combined area.
