How the calculation works
Combined project area is divided by one tile’s face area. Waste is applied to the unrounded quantity, and the final purchase result is rounded upward to a whole tile.
Formula
Tile area = tile length × tile width Exact tiles = project area ÷ tile area Purchase tiles = exact tiles × (1 + waste % ÷ 100), rounded up
Worked example
A 100 square foot area using 12 in × 12 in tiles needs 100 tiles before waste. With 10% waste, the purchase quantity is 110 whole tiles.

- Enter the actual tile face dimensions for the selected product.
- Package size is not assumed; convert the whole-tile result using the product packaging.
- Grout joints, patterns, borders, cuts, and breakage can affect actual quantity.

Does this assume tiles per box?
No. Packaging varies, so the result is a whole-tile quantity rather than a box count.
Are grout joints included?
No. The first version uses tile face area directly and states that assumption rather than applying a universal joint width.
