How the calculation works
The calculator subtracts openings from wall area and divides the remainder by the repeating brick-and-joint module. Waste is applied before rounding upward.
Formula
Net wall area = length × height − openings Brick module = (brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint) Purchase quantity = net area ÷ module area × waste factor, rounded up
Worked example
For 100 ft² with no openings, a 7.625 in × 2.25 in brick and 0.375 in joint uses an 8 in × 2.625 in module. The base estimate is about 685.7 bricks; with 10% waste, purchase 755.

Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate mortar?
No. It uses joint thickness only to estimate the repeating brick module.
Why is the final number rounded up?
Bricks are purchased as whole units, so a fractional calculated quantity cannot satisfy the measured area.
